Rambla Catalunya

Versatile spaces adapted to contemporary use

The typical Eixample apartment has proved over the years to be a highly flexible and versatile space. The railroad carriage configuration with multiple rooms accessed off a corridor is equally suitable for office and educational programmes in addition to its original residential use. The client for this project Property Development Company Norvet required a complete refurbishment of this former apartment located within a listed building on Rambla Catalunya dating from 1909 (designed by Salvador Vinyals) to accommodate its offices, a space to entertain clients and house all the various services connected with its business while maintaining a warm and welcoming ambience.

The project involved major structural interventions to the Modernisme style apartment in order to resolve the new layout which includes a reception area, cellular and shared offices, meeting rooms and break-out spaces. The original suelo hidráulico (type of polychromatic cement floor tile) provides the main aesthetic inspiration for the color scheme and configuration of both the furniture and electrical layout. The given configuration has mostly been respected with any added partitions kept free of decorative cornices within the high ceiling spaces. Bespoke reception desk and office furniture were developed for the project together with a lighting installation that compliments the architecture of the spaces.
